You can not be both unhappy and fully present in the NOW," - Eckbart Tolle

Have you ever wanted to meditate but were confused about how to do it?  Or if you do meditate, do you worry that you’re not doing it right?  If so, you’re not alone.

There are so many methods of meditation and no shortage of people who are ready to tell you that their way is the right way.  But that’s not true.

Neal Donald Walsh said it best, Ours is not a better way, ours is merely another way.”   Great advice for living a joyful life – takes the pressure off!

So here’s the deal.

In my experience, meditation is about getting quiet, still, and present with yourself.  Even a few minutes a day can help to align your body and spirit, enabling you to connect with your higher self where the true joy lives.

It’s about letting go so that you can let in peace and presence. I’ve heard it said that prayer is when you talk to Spirit.  And meditation is when Spirit talks to you. I love that!

So don’t get hung up on having to sit in the lotus position and hold your hands a certain way. That’s o.k. if you want to, but you don’t have to. It’s more important to set the intention that you are going to be at peace while being present in the moment.

If you’re just starting out, you might want to get a copy of the Mind Body Tool Kit by Dr. Andrew Weil.  The first CD teaches about breath work and has a great introduction into guided meditations and cultivating mindfulness.  The second CD helps you prepare for doing a guiding meditation and then has some amazing “Sound Healing Journeys” that you can use.  I find them very powerful when I want to do a longer meditation.

If you’re like me and want to start the day with a shorter guided meditation, you will probably enjoy Getting in the Vortex Guiding Meditations CD and User Guide by Esther and Jerry Hicks.  The CD has four great guided meditations that only last about 15 minutes each. I do one every morning, first thing before I start my day.  My favourite ones are the Financial Well-Being Meditation and the Physical Well-Being Meditation.

There are many more great CD’s and books for learning to meditate.  My advice.  Adopt what feels right to you. Take that in and leave the rest – for now that is.  As you evolve, your awareness will expand and you will find that what once served you, no longer resonates.  Then you’ll want to explore deeper.  That’s just how expansion works.  Stay open.  Let go.  Be present. And watch the magic happen!
