Don’t feel bad if people remember you only when they need you.
Feel privileged that you are like a candle
that comes to their mind when there is darkness.
Several years ago, I was introduced to Sean Young, a “serial entrepreneur”, as he called himself. And he certainly lived up to that moniker — always on his own terms (which in my opinion is one of the best ways to live a joyful life!)
At one time, Sean had a company that trained front-line retail staff in the art and skill of good customer service, with the emphasis on service. In fact he explained that he saw “service as a virtue”. That phrase always stuck with me.
I particularly like the way Wikipedia defines the word “virtue” as “moral excellence.” What a wonderful virtue to aspire to!
Sean lived and breathed service – to his clients and to everyone around him. He was a great listener and always made me feel of value in his presence — such a meaningful gesture of respect.
So, on days when you get caught up in your busy schedule, a never-ending to-do list and competing demands for your attention, just push the pause button to make time to be of service to someone else without conditions or expectations. You never know the light you will be in someone else’s darkness.
Service as a virtue – as moral excellence. What a gift to the world and a joyful way to live!
