“Work on yourself first, take responsibility for your own progress.” ~I Ching

Do you sometimes feel that you’re being selfish if you take time to practice self-care? Do you think that the needs of others should take precedent?  Do you feel that you’re not worthy of attention?

In actuality, the opposite is true.

Self-care is about self-respect.  And it’s the starting place for taking personal responsibility for what happens in your life.  It’s about knowing that only you can create your own reality and that you are 100 percent accountable for your thoughts and deeds – nobody else.  And if you don’t like the reality you have created, you are the only one who can change it. Time to stop feeling like a victim. You’re not doing anyone any good if you feel that way.

Caring for yourself is about tuning in on a soul level — about discovering what you want, what you stand for, and how you want to live your life. And only when you honour the promises you make to your sacred self can you truly be accountable to anyone else.

In my June newsletter, Joy Matters, I have included the chapter on accountability from my book Being Joy ™ which goes into more detail about why being true to yourself is so important.  When you sign-up to receive it in your inbox on the 1st of every month, I’ll send you a free download of a special eBook I wrote about the 8 Barriers to Joy & Abundance. If you’re struggling with feelings of victimhood or not being worthy of a joyful life, perhaps this guide can help.

Remember, everything starts with the self.  And in this interconnected world we live in, being accountable to yourself will have a dramatic ripple effect on everything and everyone else around you.  Make sure to read my next three blogs where I’ll talk more about this.

Until then, here’s an activity from my book you might want to try to help strengthen your agreements with self:

Make one new promise to yourself or others that you believe can be sustained over the next 40 days. It can be big or small, but please make it something new – that you’re not already doing – something you want to change or improve on. The important thing is that you are doing this because it will come from your authentic self and that you are going to hold yourself accountable for keeping the promise. At the end of 40 days, do something special to honour your kept commitment.

And here’s a daily affirmation to help keep you on track:

P.S.  What’s the promise you are going to make to yourself over the next 40 days?  Would love to hear about it.
